Ziguinchor itself is located on the southern bank of the Casamance River. Wide palm tree-lined boulevards extend from its long stretch of docks and quays, while its large port makes it one of the major trading hubs of this sub-region.

Culturally, ethnically and geographically, Casamance (including Ziguinchor) is a world away from the rest of Senegal. Lying in the sub-tropics, Ziguinchor experiences warmer and wetter weather, while Basse-Casamance, where Ziguinchor is located, is the only Christian majority region in the country.

The economy of Ziguinchor
The city's economy relies mainly on agriculture, tourism and its forest resources. But, you can also find many European and American companies which have successfully set up there. In fact, local authorities are very favourable to foreign investment to boost its economy.
Thanks to its climate, Casamance is Senegal's larder, providing a vast array of nuts, legumes, fruits and vegetables that feed the whole nation. It is also home to most of Senegal's rice paddies. Being considerable 鈥榞reener' than the rest of the country has led to a thriving agriculture industry, while its forests - often contentiously - provide wood for much of the country.
Meanwhile, tourism in an increasingly growing sector. Due to its location, cut off from the rest of the country, Casamance has endured low-level separatist struggles for a number of years, with the main conflict coming to an end in 2014. As such, tourists have returned to the region to take advantage of its majestic climate and stunning beauty - in particular the coastal resort of Cap-Skirring.
Ziguinchor is well-connected with many routes to the Gambia, Guinea-Bissau and the south-east of Senegal. It is also a 50-minute flight from Dakar's Blaise Diagne International or an overnight ferry from Dakar's port.

The labour market in Ziguinchor
Most foreigners living in Ziguinchor work in the agroindustry, forestry management or tourism businesses, while there are also lots of NGOs and charities that have bases here. In the coastal resort of Cap-Skirring, you will find many Francophone retirees and expats who have come to work in the hotel, bar or restaurant business.
Job hunting in Ziguinchor
Don't be thinking that thanks to its sleepy, relaxed nature that Ziguinchor offers few employment opportunities, as you can find many career opportunities if you go through the appropriate channels. For instance, you can seek direction at the region's Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture in order to get in touch with companies operating there and then send spontaneous applications to them.
However, you are not likely to find recruitment agencies in Ziguinchor, so using online job websites and professional social networks can be interesting search tools.
