Lithuania is often called 鈥渢he land of wood and water鈥 for its many forests and lakes and the untapped potential of an ecotourism destination. This Baltic country lies in northern Europe in between Latvia, Belarus, Poland, and Russia.

Why Lithuania

Continuing the relatively small list of understated travel destinations in Europe, Lithuania is getting slowly discovered and instantly appreciated for its calm and laid-back pace of life, beautiful European architecture, low cost of living, blazing fast public Wi-Fi, and vast areas of untouched natural wonder.

Travelling to Lithuania is easy, and for quite a while the country boasted one of the most relaxed long-term visa policies in Europe. But with the growing interest and more and more visitors, alas, that is no more. However, the country is still an opportunity klondike for digital nomads.

Best cities to work from

Vilnius is Lithuania's capital and largest city. However, with its calm character, old town feel, cobbled alleyways, and steeples with the background of green hilltops, the city produces an impression of a quaint European village rather than a metropolis. Here, you will find a quiet yet confident working atmosphere with all the needed amenities.

Kaunas is the second biggest city in Lithuania. As a city of students, it features a lively and vibrant atmosphere, quite fitting for those working remotely. With a good selection of coworking spaces and easy access to Wi-Fi, Kaunas is a friendly nomad destination and a popular spot for tourists with its enigmatic Old Town, monasteries, museums, and cathedrals.

The internet and coworking spaces

Lithuania takes a leading position in Europe when it comes to fibre-optic internet network accessibility (with the speed of 45.11 Mbps). As mentioned earlier, the country is also known as one of the best providers of public Wi-Fi with 16.6Mbps average download speed.

Coworking spaces are aplenty and Lithuania's cities, both big and small, are also famous for their coffee shop culture where you can sit down and work with a nice steaming cup of coffee and buttery local pastries.

Leisure in Lithuania

Though a relatively small country, Lithuania boasts a large number of sights and attractions, and is a popular travel destination in the region. It is well known for its pristine natural sites and is a good location for ecotourism. The Baltic coast offers a good selection of seaside resorts; there are urban attractions to discover as well such as the Church of St. Anne and the Kaunas Castle.

What to know before arriving

Lithuania is a member state of the Schengen Zone, which makes it relatively easy to travel to. If you are a resident of a country that is also a member state of the Schengen Zone, you can travel to Lithuania only with your National Identity Card. Alternatively, you can apply for a Schengen Visa in advance and enjoy access to other countries in the region.
