About

I had been looking for a job in Normandy since last May, so I was receiving unemployment benefits. I had an apartment that I kept. I arrived in England at the end of last October with my car. P么le emploi allows me to go abroad for 3 months to learn a language and find work, which I did. At the end of 3 months, not having found a job, I was forced to return to France. Once in France I received a call for a job offer, which I accepted straight away. My car was insured for 3 months and expired on February 26. From that moment on I started looking for information to insure my vehicle. DVLA sent me documents which I completed and returned with payment of tax and registration fees. All my documents were returned to me and told that I needed to contact Personal Transport Unit to register my vehicle. I called this service and was told that I needed to register my car online with HMRC Revenue and Customs. So I registered it and discovered that I had to pay a fine of 拢640 because I had not registered my car within 14 days of arriving in England. So I called this service back to get explanations about this law and the person offered to send me an email to explain my situation. The response was that they lowered the fine to 拢500, that I had to pay it within 30 days and that I could appeal the fine by post or in court. I know that no one is supposed to ignore the law but why did the customs officers not inform me of this obligation when I disembarked in Poole!!!. I am distraught and don't know how to get out of this nightmare. I am listening to the smallest advice from you... Thank you Jennifer
