My expat journey

Wermelskirchen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany
My home is here
Instructional Designer
Nice house, and cheap. Lovely countryside, near to K枚ln & Dusseldorf.
I didn't expect the rain, even for an English person it rains a lot here! Also - they are incapable of sorting out the traffic.

Al Jubayl, Eastern Province, Saudi Arabia
Still unfolding..
Designing Training for Sadara Chemical Company
Massively impressed at the development that has gone in to the area to make it a pleasant place to live.

K枚ln, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany
Spent a year and a half alone in a small flat before selling up and bringing my family there. Now they are in a fabulous house just outside K枚ln. I just need to pay for it, one day I'll be going back..
Instructional Designer for the European Aviation Safety Agency - part of the EU. Also freelance work for the World Customs Organization
K枚ln is now my adopted home. Reminds me of a German version of Brighton. Plenty going on there, alternative scenes and all that. It's in the centre of Europe, and a whole lot more affordable than London
Unfortunately, the Job I was certain to get turned out to be an illusion, and after 3 years I found myself with a big mortgage and no job.

London, England, England
Took over a house with a dream garden. Started my career proper. Daughter got to grow up in London.
Worked as a resources manager in the local college - Eventually designing learning materials for City University London, and Volvo cars
London is my native home. I suppose I feel more engaged there with what is going on around me than anywhere else.
Even on a good wage, struggling to make ends meet, with the insane prices of houses and things. If you are not born rich, London is not the glamorous city it is made out to be. Although sometimes, you could just spend a day and night in the City and everything is forgiven..

Hamburg, Germany
Living in a hip and exciting district of a hip and exciting city...
Various. Trained as a Graphic Designer. Taught English. Worked for a software startup and as a translator.
Always something new going on in the City. Fun place to be during my younger years.
Eventually frustrated at the lack of career opportunities and no garden..

Coburg, Bavaria, Germany
Living well, in sight of the fine castle...
Working on Building Sites as a Civil Engineering Apprentice
Lovely people, still visit friends there often. And of course, I met my wife..

Greater London, England, England
Grew up in Epping, just outside London, then a fairly rural town where artists and escapees from London lived, unfortunately now a mega-expensive commuter town full of stockbrokers...
The forest. The countryside. Benign British weather and wildlife.

Its a good question. Here in Jubail social activities seem to have fallen flat. I'm here on my own. I can't begin to imagine how frustrated my wife and daughter would get on the compound here. Me, its ok. I like my work, and colleagues. But ... Read More
