My husband and I are from the Ottawa, ON, Canada area. We are both fluent in English and French. My husband is a general contractor/carpenter. I am a CHRP specialist (Human Resources) and have focused most of my career in dispute resolution, negotiations, etc. I left my profession following emergency spinal cord surgery 5 years ago. I lost most of the feeling in my left leg and was deemed to spend the rest of my life in a wheelchair. Following almost 2 years of intense rehab, I walk freely, without assistance, and no one would be the wiser. I'm actually in better shape today than I was before surgery. That said, getting back into my profession after a 5-year absence has proven to be very difficult. Medical specialists have also been encouraging me to get away from Canadian winters. My husband and I are in the beginning stages of considering a move to either Cancun or Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. We've been to Mexico a total of 14 times, between us. My husband would like to work in Mexico and hopefully fabricate kitchens, bathrooms and the like. We have no idea what opportunities there may be for us there. We would have to rent a small home or condo for the first year or so, then possibly purchase something (depending on income/work opportunities). We have a lot of good working years left in us, but a slower lifestyle and warmer climate would certainly help me. And my husband loves the heat, lol! We're a young, vibrant, middle-aged couple and feel that we need this change. Any input from current expats residing in either the general Cancun or Puerto Vallarta areas, notably with respect to job opportunities and the like, would be very much appreciated!
