My expat journey

Rijeka, Croatia
In R4L, I came from Italy and 鈥渄escended鈥 to T眉rkiye...
The notoriety that France (and the French) had at the time of 鈥渦nited鈥 Yugoslavia.
These children, barefoot (extreme poverty), who sold small woven baskets, filled with raspberries and blueberries, and who were delighted by pens and candy, along the mountain roads.

Landeck, Tyrol, Austria
These were trips (one in an R4L, one in an Opel Corsa) to visit the different castles of Ludwig II of Bavaria.
Calm, cleanliness, pure air.
Paid tourist routes.

Spontin, Wallonia, Belgium
During a trip in R4L, I visited the castle; I still have slides of the great room with the monumental table and impressive armor.
All the friendly French speaking Belgians I met and the variety of beers to taste.
The rivalry between the Flemish and the Walloons.

Merkenes, Sweden

Rians, Provence-Alpes-C么te d'Azur, France
A life close to relatively calm Nature, in a green setting and a small house.
For several years: retired from mass distribution.
I love all these regions teeming with history(s), architecture(s), Nature and Natural Parks. All these generous, smiling, altruistic people, who participate in change "for the better", like to share and travel, respect Nature, fauna and flora.
The "dirtyness" (the dirty roadsides...), the incivility, the stupidity, the aggressiveness, the cunning, the administration...

脜rhus, Central Jutland, Denmark
I visited the region in R4L; magnificent nature, at the Marselisborg palace/summer residence, deer and deer in the wild...
Meeting the Danes, through the Tourist Office and through "Meet the Danes"...Discovering Bang and Olufsen style and technology...
Raw fish on canapes.

Triberg im Schwarzwald, Baden-W眉rttemberg, Germany
Went down to the R枚misher Ka茂ser hotel, where the staff were dressed in traditional costumes, for a visit to the "Valley of the Cuckoos"...
The clock museum, with its limonaires; the various cuckoo makers' shops, the monumental clocks, the "giant cuckoo"... The pretzels, the spaetzles, the "Schwarzwalder Kirschtorte"... The walk to the falls, with these squirrels accustomed to humans, who come to steal a piece of cake or a peanut...
Tourist exploitation.

Kalamp谩ka, Thessaly, Greece
Visit Meteora, monasteries perched on rocky peaks, accessible on foot or by small winding roads.
The landscapes with ocher decorations, the monasteries perched like Cathar castles. The secluded life, calm (zenitude), far from any big city with its multiple pollutions.
It is a country where very arid regions are not recommended to visit in the middle of summer; fortunately, here and there, there are fountains/watering troughs (for cooling off, or for animals) and sellers of thirst-quenching watermelons.

Bamberg, Bavaria, Germany
Thanks to Couchsurfing, friendly encounters, visits to the city, its history.
The calm of this great city, its places of "traditions", the old houses, the brasseries with magnificent wooden decorations, the "good food"...
The sound of a construction machine working on a Saturday afternoon.

Nordnes, Nordland, Norway
At Nordnes-Camp, in a small chalet with a terrace; I was there to try to photograph the Northern Lights; alas, I saw more reindeer and snow (especially at the Polar Circle Center).
The calm of the place, despite the road; the campsite with the main wooden premises, with a green roof. The good cuisine (the "pantagruelic" buffet), the cooked salmon. The variety of tourist objects and clothing worthy of a Tourist Office.
It remained a real campsite, very deserted at this time of year. I was amazed by the taste of the caramel melted cheese.

Istanbul, T眉rkiye
Marseille-Istanbul raid, 9,600 kilometers in one month.
An old city teeming with life; water carriers (lemonade, in fact), shoeshine boys, hammams (and baths) with "broomstick" masseurs like wrestlers, lots of architecture: Topkapi Palace, Ste Sophie Church, Blue Mosque (interior decorated with inlays and blue mosaic)... and the Grand Bazaar. At the time (1975), most taxis were taxis. gleaming and chrome "big American cars" where passengers crammed in as much as possible to pay less (!).
Far too greasy cuisine for my taste.

P谩tra, West Greece, Greece
Trip in a Renault 4 L from Marseille...
At the time, I was a pastry chef, and I had a month's leave.
The cuisine and good humor of the natives. Impressed by the dizzying depth of the Corinth Canal (isthmus).
I had chosen a hotel too close to the piers and the port of Patras was an anthill at night, a bit like the market halls of Rungis; lots of hubbub and messages over the loudspeaker.
