Charleston is a beautiful city with great food, beaches, and friendly locals.
Living in Charleston was extremely expensive if you didn't have a corporate job. There are a lot of big companies moving in, pushing the more affordable areas further and further outside the city. The traffic was awful.
Charlotte, North Carolina, USA

Charlotte is a big city with a lot of great restaurants and nightlife. It's about halfway between the beach and the mountains, so a trip to either is possible within a 3 hour drive.
The traffic was very bad in Charlotte, and the city has very poor public transportation. There are also some dangerous areas which are best avoided.

Gwangju was nice! The expat community was very close and fun.
It was very difficult to get to know locals here.
Boone, North Carolina, USA

Boone is a fun little mountain town with excited, optimistic, hippie college students and great local eateries and businesses in general. It's in the mountains of North Carolina with amazing hiking in your backyard. It's basically a smaller Asheville.
Boone is so cold in the winter. It basically has Canadian weather. It's also difficult to get to -- the nearest big airport is Charlotte, which is 2 hours south.

Barcelona was so fun! I loved that it was right on the ocean.
The people in Barcelona were not quite as welcoming as they tend to be in the rest of Spain.

Dresden is a beautiful city with great transportation, beautiful architecture, and easy access to Prague, Berlin, Munich, Vienna, and hundreds of other amazing places in Europe.
Eastern Germany is cold and cloudy! I saw the sun for one full afternoon in November of 2007.
