My father's family is of Mauritian descent so we have always had an interest in this unique and beautiful island. In March 2009 my husband Duncan and I visited Mauritius and fell in love. We have never thought of relocating/ immigrating - you can go ahead and call me proudly South African - but have recently become parents and clearly the mommy instinct has kicked in! My son, Ethan is ONE at the end of August and I worry every day about what his future will be like in this country. Though it is sad to admit, I have become one of the many South African's that feel we are playing Russian roulette with our lives in this country. While there are certainly still positive aspects of this country, the negatives are no longer easy to ignore. Every morning I find myself driving to work bawling my eyes out because of horrific stories on the news or with a knot in my stomach because I have forgotten to lock my handbag in the boot and could be the victim of a "smash and grab" at any moment. As a child, in an obviously different time, we lived on the coast and I fondly remember being able to hop on my bike and explore, I simply want the same upbringing for my child!
