Cordoba, Argentina

Aug 2005 - Aug 2007

Cordoba, Argentina

After an absence of about 15 years (I grew up in this city), I returned to work as an independent translator and to take up some graduate courses in translation studies. I was able to spend significant time with family members and some old friends, and make new friends. I took an 8-month course on broadcasting, which I enjoyed immensely. I rediscovered the pleasure of walking everywhere in downtown C贸rdoba, local dishes (like empanadas 谩rabes and alfajores) and nice eateries.
Spanish technical translator
Having been raised in the city, I was very familiar with downtown and many surrounding neighborhoods. The dollar/peso exchange was very favorable to me at the time. I was able to rent a studio apartment in downtown for the equivalent of 160 dollars a month, and get a nice steak and salad dinner for seven dollars. Sauntering and walking late at night felt safe and comfortable. Then again, I have lived in the city for decades before and Spanish is my first mother tongue, so I was not a tourist in any sense of the word.
Public transportation had suffered and felt much less consistent in this period of time. Instead of taking buses or trolleys, I relied on local taxis.

Interesting. ChatGPT can't tell when to use uppercase (may煤sculas) properly. Also, its answers to those concise questions are way too wordy for my taste. Read More

How do you move your stuff from the US to Spain? by zurlita

Hi there! We are planning to move to Malaga this summer and we want to reduce our stuff to minimum. However, after almost 20 years in the US, it will be probably hard to leave with just a piece of luggage. Even though we would make effort to reduce ...

guynoir

@zurlita I am making similar plans in 4-6 years from now, from Maryland to Spain. However, my planned solution involves shipping by container. The average cost is $5,000-6,000 and you can choose port to port or door to door delivery. Yes, it's far ... Read More

Computer Monitor Rental in Barcelona? by meliss808

Hi there! I'm hoping to rent an external monitor to use with my laptop once I arrive in Barcelona next week. Does anyone have any recommendations on stores that do this? The only ones I've found are purchase only. Thanks!

guynoir

I would never pack a monitor inside a suitcase; the styrofoam molds inside the original packaging aren't impact resistant as far as I know. Whenever I've traveled and worked out of town, even overseas, the laptop and other electronics travel with me ... Read More
