About
I am from Austin, TX, USA and am just moving to Punta Carretas/Pocitos barrios in Montevideo, Uruguay to teach English. I received TEFL/TESOL certification from St. Edward's University in Austin and will be teaching for a few English Institutes in the city through late 2012 or early 2013 (unless I fall in love with the place, which is possible, though I need spicy food and UY is not the place for it!)
My next stop is possibly French Guiana, though I would like to know more about the country from ex-pats working there. I am a native English speaker and speak decent French (and am currently learning Spanish). I would love to live and teach English somewhere in S. America where French is spoken but know very little about this country at this point.
Does anyone have any advice/info/anecdotes/cautionary tales about life in French Giuana? I initially looked into teaching English in France or Belgium but with EU countries, well, it's not so easy if you're not an EU citizen. Given French Guiana's designation under the French government, is it as difficult (to impossible) for a US citizen to teach say in Cayenne or another major city there?
Any assistance is greatly appreciated and I'm happy to answer any questions I can as an ex-pat living in Uruguay!

Essentials to live in Uruguay by Christine
Hi, As an expat living in Uruguay, what would you advise the ones about to pack to bring along? What are the items you can easily find in Uruguay? On the other hand, what is less common or quite expensive? Share with us what you would ...
Be sure to bring your favorite clothes. They are generally pretty cheaply made except for imports (such as Levis or Converse), which are over twice as much in Uruguay than they are in the US. Read More
