Lives in Puerto Lopez

Speaks English and Spanish is improving daily!

Registration: 25 June 2013

About

am a single woman of color who retired from working for the United States government after 41 years of service and moved to Ecuador arriving Nov. 1, 2013 together with my 120 lb., 11 year old Cane Corso. I first conceived of this possibility for me in 2010, visited Ecuador to look it over in 2011, liked what I saw and planned to arrive in 2012, Those who would steal my dream were hard at work, but I prevailed and ultimately arrived in Puerto Lopez this past November. I chose Puerto Lopez because living here is real life! That's what I wanted. This life might not be for everyone for forever, but it is for me for right now.
Interests: writing, knitting sewing, music, Photography

Occupation

I am Retired.

Since Nov 2013

Puerto Lopeez, Ecuador

Life is quiet, as I prefer and hoped it would be. I take Spanish lessons from a local school, and my teacher has helped me tremendously to gain insight into the people and the wayd of Ecuadorian culture in this village.
I am retired
I live right on the edge of the ocean and it costs nearly nothing to live here
The only thing I could maybe complain about is there us no movie theatre.

I wish I could make a helpful suggestion for you. I live in Puerto Lopez on the ocean and, while it is beautiful and peaceful, just like I was seeking, I don't know that this is where I would want to school my children. That answer is ... Read More

Hi, Shirl51 -- I applaud you for your willingness to just step out there. That's pretty much what I did in Nov. 2013 -- just stepped out there and brought my dog with me to Ecuador. However, I did start looking at what was available and what I ... Read More

Glad you have decided to give Ecuador a shot after all. Not sure what is "feasible" in your opinion. Flights will probably be more expensive during Dec & Jan, unless you investigate & purchase several months in advance. Weather ... Read More

I agree 100% on the comment about skin color being a major social determinative factor. I believe the deference and preference shown to a person with lighter skin color is due more to a class distinction rather than racial distinction. The lighter ... Read More

United States Postal Service and Customs by frugalpirate

So I've read through the threads. With the extra fees they have on airlines, I thought it might be easier to send some of my clothes and things down through the mail. It's around 60 bucks for 20 pounds. I read the restrictions on the USPS site and ...

I received a similar shock when considering how best to bring my clothing. I was told that I could not ship used clothing into Ecuador. My personal clothes are considered "used clothing" unless I have receipts and/or there are tags ... Read More

I have obviously not been monitoring my post. As an update to my post of some time ago, first, I was not intending that my post be interpreted as strictly about me being subjected to racism. I was merely relaying one aspect of my experience in ... Read More
