Hi everyone,
My name's John and I've just came back to Korea fresh out of college from Chicago, U.S. I chose to join this blog because I wanted to continue a passion of mine: Learning about other cultures and meeting people like me who have lived or traveled in multiple different countries. I'm originally from Hong Kong, but my family moved to Korea after a few years and I attended international school here. I then went to a high school in the United States on the east coast and then college in Chicago. In the middle of high school, I spent a summer in Santander, Spain which I still consider a turning point in my life to this day. Ever since my childhood in HK when I had a great group of diverse friends, I've always loved meeting other internationals and learning their culture from them. I've also seen the frequent misunderstandings and conflicts that occur between different cultural groups (i.e. while translating between Korean US armies) and have always felt strongly about doing whatever I can to bridge the gap. Having been in an organization called AIESEC for 2.5 years, I also know the potential fun and benefits that emerge when people from different countries hang out. When you're sharing an apartment with people from Brazil, Poland, Algeria, and Bulgaria, you know that something special is happening. Finally, having moved around myself, I know how lonely things can be, especially when you move to a country on the other side of the world, far away from your family or your old friends. But as I have realized not too long ago, there is always the opportunity, the adventure of meeting new people and creating great memories/links with them.
So, I'd like to humbly offer my friendship to you. I once had a friend from Singapore visit me. She had a great time, but I was also grateful because she gave me the chance to take her to all the great places in Seoul I knew, translate for her, and also allow her to experience a wide array of experiences, ranging from traditional dining/high end clubs to drinking plum wine on a plastic table next to a 711 and setting off fireworks next to the Han River.
Oh, and hopefully there might be some people out there who can speak to me in Spanish and help me learn any of the following: Chinese, Portuguese, or German.
Well, hope to meet some of you soon!
John
