Preparing to climb Mount Kilimanjaro requires physical fitness, mental preparedness, and proper gear.

Antipas

Very helpful information for the Kili climbers, Antipas

I feel qualified to answer this as I have guided many climbers to the top of Kilimanjaro with Tranquil Kilimanjaro.

A few tips: You can find more tips here

Get a guide. Essential.

  1. Join an organised group. They will be organised, with a heirarchy of guides, porters, kitchen staff etc, and will carry your equipment (and tents if you are camping). You will just need to carry a daysack.
  2. Join an organised group. It will be more sociable; you can share your experiences with others.
  3. Try to take one of the camping routes rather than the huts route. 75% of people do the huts route, but the camping routes are much more interesting.
  4. Travel light. You don鈥檛 want someone else having to cart a lot of unnecessary stuff up the hill.
  5. Take what you will need. Lots of layers; it can get very cold at night (minus 15 deg C). I wore seven layers on summit night.
  6. Make sure you have comfortable boots that you have broken in. Your feet need to be comfortable.
  7. Get fit. I ran to the gym for three months beforehand, then did an hour on an uphill treadmill and a rowing machine, then ran home. Any level of fitness more than you鈥檇 usually be is ideal, although you cannot prepare for nearly 6,000 metres.
  8. Build in at least one acclimatisation day, a day where you ascend for half a day and then descend to a similar height to where you started the day. Never go for the companies that tell you that you don鈥檛 need an acclimatisation day. Their success rate is poor. You will need to acclimatise.
  9. Go slowly. Pole, pole as they say in Swahili. You鈥檒l probably be climbing about 1,000 metres per day. But you have all day to do it. Go slowly and enjoy the views.
  10. Be prepared to fail. Not everyone makes it, and it is almost random who has to turn back. Don鈥檛 be afraid to turn back (the head guide will send someone back down with you).
  11. Enjoy it.

I鈥檓 sure there are a lot more tips, but these are the ones I can think of at

the top of my head.
