Navigating friendships as an expat in Malaysia

Hello everyone,

Moving to Malaysia reshapes many aspects of life, and friendships are often one of the biggest changes. Whether you're maintaining lifelong bonds back home, building new local relationships, or forming connections with fellow expats, friendship in expatriation comes with its own joys and challenges. We invite you to share your experience to help fellow expats and soon-to-be expats:

Have you found it easy to connect with fellow expats or locals in Malaysia? Why or why not?

Have you noticed cultural differences in the way people make friends or share personal matters?

Since moving to in Malaysia, how have your friendships back home evolved? Do you ever feel 鈥渙ut of sync鈥 with friends and family in your home country?

How do you deal with the temporary nature of many expat friendships when people (or you) eventually move on?

Have you changed the way you approach relationships since becoming an expat?

What has been your biggest challenge in building or maintaining friendships in Malaysia? Any advice to share?

Thank you for your contribution,

Cheryl

i found it very easy to have local friends in Malaysia. I had one expat friend who is an Aussie and is still a good friend even though we have since moved to Indonesia. In my opinion locals like expats because they think they have money or can have a better future. Since moving to Malaysia my friendships back home or anywhere else have not changed at all. I don't really care about new expat friendships. Since I moved to Indonesia I've had two or three expat friends but the friendships always ended either because the friend turned out to be a complete tosser or because they just stopped communicating, possibly they died or moved elsewhere or repatriated. I am old so I don't change the way I approach relationships ever and never have done in the past. It was never a challenge building or maintaining a relationship in Malaysia. I have a family and that occupies a lot of my time, having friendships outside my family are not very important. I have a few friends back in the UK as well as siblings. Mostly the friends I have back home have been friends since we were teenagers or in university.

I honestly don't really care about making new friends and never have done. I also think feeling the need to make friends with either expats or locals is for desperate people. I think that if you are single then just having a partner is enough, and if you have a family then friends become less important.
