As far as I know, you can still teach undergraduate students in a government university if you have a university degree in any field.

Language schools generally prefer their teachers to have completed some type of TEFL certification such as the CELTA.

For teaching English in Thailand, the main point about qualifications is that if you have them, you will are likely to have more job offers and better opportunities to get paid a higher salary.

I wish to contribute a bit more clarity to previous ^ reply responses,...you've received...

There is a huge difference between possessing (30-day wonder)聽 CELTA or TEFL "certifications" to teach, and actually being qualifiied to teach.

In a country that requires an aspiring foreign school teacher to possess a (minimum) Bachelor's Degree (in anything) first, in order to receive a "work permit",...then actual qualifications are really a moot point.

To get hired by one of the high-end (private) "International Schools",...you'll need to be "qualified" to teach,...if you intend to get/keep the teaching job.

For the (Shopping Mall) Language Centers, or Thai Government School jobs, a basic degree and TEFL certification will usually suffice.

Since the CELTA or other TEFL course are only a month long and not all that expensive, why not at least do that and get your official certificate to teach English. I would imagine it gives you a big head start over those who have no qualifications to teach except being a native English speaker.

Even with only those basic qualifications of a degree and a TEFL certificate you would not be looking for a job with an International school, and would certainly not get it due to the high number of highly qualified teachers who would be applying for such a dream job. But it would perhaps qualify you for many English language schools not just in Thailand but allover Asia. However, note that some schools prefer applicants with teaching experience in addition to a degree.
