It is already a US territory, and there should be plenty of info about schools, safety areas etc. Don't think you'll find much about USVI at the expat-blog, mostly because it's for expats, and you won't be one if you consider moving inside us territory ;-)
If you enjoy the us way of living/lifestyle, the USVI is a good choise, in my opinion. If you consider something else? Pass over some more information.

My wife and I lives on Martinique. I consider it to be a safe island. Our 4 kids are growned up (and out !!!) Prices in Martinique is probably 30% higher than Florida, some stuff cheaper, some are even more expencive. It is a French Island, part of the EU but not Schengen. Meaning as a US Citizen, you need a EU visa with extention to Martinique to live here. Labour and prices are aprox the same as France mainland. I read a lot about the locals not beeing very friendly, but haven't met any of these yet. We've made very good friends here, good service, we try our best to learn and speak French, but never expect to have any English replies when we talk to people :-) As聽 EU/EEA聽 citizens, there was nearly no paperwork for us when we moved here. Same rules goes for Guadeloupe.
Very good communication by plane or boats between the islands, also a lot of planes to Europe, every day. Never been afraid of getting the 'Island Disease' here, because there's a lot of valleys, mountains, fjords etc around the island.
OK, this is 'MY' island, can't tell you about the other islands, because haven't been there yet. Quick summary: Dispice what other people say; friendly and nice people, good infrastructure, I guess schools are pretty good, prices similar to France mainland (mostly). It is not a third world island. If you want to pay thirld world prices, go there instead. And it's not for everyone ;-) If the american lifestyle is your way of living, I advice you to go to USVI if Caribbean is your destination :-)
