Fair advice, honestly. If you're thinking of settling on the coast, visiting in August rather than February tells you a lot more about what you're signing up for.One correction though: there is official monitoring, even if prevention is lacking. The Met Service issues a weekly sargassum forecast with impact ratings by destination. Today's (valid Aug 4-11) has San Pedro and Caye Caulker at major impact, Hopkins and Placencia at moderate: nms.gov.bz/forecast/sargassum-forecastWhere you'd live makes most of the difference. The east-facing coast and cayes catch it March through October, worst June-August. The lagoon side of Ambergris, Corozal Bay, and anywhere inland see little to none. That's a real factor to weigh if you're house-hunting now.The smell is hydrogen sulfide from the seaweed decomposing on the sand, which is why it's worse where it sits uncollected for days. It's a genuine irritant, not just unpleasant, so if anyone has respiratory issues it belongs in the decision.We track it beach by beach here if it's useful for comparing areas (my site): ***
