That was not my experience when I rented in San Juan. If the unit has water and electric service in the landlord or prior tenant's name, it is a matter of changing it to your name and the change is immediate. The problem is how to do it. I had to drive outside San Juan proper and wait on line at PREPA. I had to show I.D. and my lease and put a deposit on my CC. I don't know what the process is now during the pandemic. Perhaps it can be done over the phone. I wouldn't count on it though.

Puerto Rico is 50 years behind the times. What can be done over the phone with Florida Power and Light turns into an all-day affair. If utilities are in the landlord's name, many of them let you reimburse them directly each month. Works for them because by not changing the utilities, they can skirt reporting rental income as though they still live there (and possibly retain a homestead exemption), so many are willing to operate that way. Just ask the landlord if you can make such an arrangement.

I was told the same thing, but you have to dig deeper. I informed the water and electric companies that I had a child and they moved fairly quickly (days). With the electricity, we scheduled an appointment and drove to AAE in Vega Baja - services turned on the next day. Now, that we've gone to Luma on the island this could be different. Water, I sent an email requesting service be transferred to centrotelefonico04@acueductospr.com. Call them and send all requested docs and it shouldn't take long at all. We have Liberty cable and again we got an appt fairly quickly. Again, we leveraged our son 馃槀馃槀 - it worked. Stay vigilante in asking to get it turned on quickly. I have been told that it may have been because of urbanizaciones we live in, but I find a pleasant attitude goes a very long way. I can dig up numbers if you'd like.

Prepa or AEE no longer in charge of the public utility now is a whole new private company. Luma Energy look for info online and give them a call you can do all Online or over the phone.

We had to move to another location in Puerto Rico and it has been without power for about 2 years. That being said we had to have an electrician recertify it and have been waiting LUMA for 1 1/2 weeks without electricity. We鈥檙e pretty unhappy right now and I鈥檓 about to try & use my husband鈥檚 need of insulin to see if we can expedite it. It is very backwards in regards to systems & government issues here. Then there are the celos (official stamps) everything takes that have to be purchased outside of the government offices as you can鈥檛 use cash or credit cards to pay for the fees.
