The application fee is small, and if you do it yourself (rather than paying an attorney) that will save a lot. The biggest expenses are getting down to the Bulgarian embassy in London, and getting official documents (e.g. marriage certificate) and legalisations (and maybe even a certified translation). But, overall, it's a pretty easy process if you have an appropriate relative who's already a Bulgarian legal resident, and it's probably going to cost a few hundred rather than a few thousand.

It's a bit easier for me as I arrived here pre-Brexit, but earlier this year I did Family Reunification in order to import my very old father (97 and still ticking). I did the submission mostly myself, but I paid a local "helper" to check it. Probably less than 300 euros overall.

Thank you I'd heard it costs a lot of money not counting the multiple visits to the embassy聽 in London then it has to be renewed over here every year. Thankfully we go out ours just before Brexit and when we receive our new ones next week we can apply for perminant residence cards.

Kath, I'm glad you and your hubby got your residence arranged. For new application, the person would need to apply and then go for an interview at the Embassy in London to get a long-stay visa. The Embassy fee required to submit the application won't be more than 200 EUR, but as Gwyn said there will be other costs assembling the paperwork. Family reunification is likely to be cheapest and easiest of all the options. Chances are they should be able to manage it at a fairly low cost without needing an immigration lawyer's help.

Sofia lawyers are a bit more expensive than elsewhere. The initial fee is 600 euro plus a fee for additional work which would be close to 1500 euro. Depending where you live and will need to register residency, you will also pay for the attorney's flight (if the attorney is based in Sofia and you reside elsewhere), drive time, food, hotel etc and time standing in line at the migration department. Try to locate an immigration attorney close to where you will live/register residency.

The cost of obtaining all the documents, getting them apostilled, official translation... that adds up, too! I'm trying the DIY approach first, then if I get refused I will use a lawyer. But it's still not exactly cheap!

The problem isn鈥檛 the physical cost of the Visa but all the related costs. The ACRO 拢95, translation, notary and apostilles. Then travel to London and back twice. Ours have totalled with travel and a flight 拢3k approx per person and we still have residency card costs, more translation and fees for lawyer/translator to accompany you. I thought I had added it all up and budgeted but it was far more expensive. We had to pay out for two ACROs because of the time it took to get the Visa.
