Unfortunately there are a lot of 'upfront' charges involved with property rental - a minimum month rental, deposit (equivalent to a months rent) and agency fees - often several hundred 拢.

One way to reduce your bills is to find a someone renting privately, which may eliminate the rental charges.聽 There could also be room to negotiate the rent.

I don't recommend renting through Airbnb, because the costs will be much higher in the long term - holiday lets are relatively more costly.

Cambridge itself can be pretty expensive unfortunately, but if you look a little further out towards Royston (just for example) you should be able to find something more affordable. There are pretty good train connections from there into the city.
As for how to search, is a well-established site.
