Social Security AIMA requirement

Filed an application for social security number, lost the info on their website and wondering how long it takes to get a response. I need to follow up to see f the registered letter was already sent. Thanks in advance for all the well informed responses typical of this website.

Once you have submitted your application, you will receive a registered letter at the address you provided on the form, informing you that you can collect your NISS from the Social Security Office.

It frequently takes from 2 weeks to a month.

How to Follow Up Without the Online Info:

  1. 1. By Phone

You can call the Linha Seguran莽a Social. The agents have direct access to the backend system and can look up your application using your full name, passport/ID number, and Tax Number (NIF).

Phone numbers: Dial 210 545 400 or 300 512 512.

  1. 2. In Person

You can walk into any Servi莽o de Atendimento da Seguran莽a Social or a Loja do Cidad茫o.

Bring your physical Passport/ID and your NIF document.

Inform the clerk at the desk that you submitted an online request but lost the reference data, and you need a verifica莽茫o (status check). If it has already been approved in the system, they can often print the NISS document.

  1. 3. Check Your Email Junk/Spam Folders

Because the notification is automated, the approval email from seg-social.pt very frequently lands in Spam or Junk folders. Search your inbox for "NISS" or "Seguran莽a Social".

聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 I went to the social security office today and was told the application was rejected and told I didn't need it for AIMA renewal. So what's the scoop, can I renew my residency without a number or is it all just one agency not communicating with another???

When you access the AIMA Renewal Portal to submit your residence permit renewal application, the platform automatically cross-checks data. The form includes an authorization to consult public databases. The objective here is to ensure that anyone applying for a residence permit does not have any tax or Portuguese social security debts.

If the applicant indicates that they hold retirement income, the system only validates their status with the Tax Authority (Finan莽as) to guarantee they have no tax debts in Portugal.

The Social Security validation is simply bypassed automatically by AIMA's system, because the data cross-referencing does not detect active professional activity in Portugal.

In other words, and as far as I know, citizens living on their own income or pensions only need to prove that they still maintain the means of subsistence that formed the basis for granting their initial residence permit.
