I don't think you need an appointment for a NIE. I believe you need an appointment for EU Citizen Registration instead. You will get a certificate (Certificado de registro de ciudadano de la Uni贸n Europea) and they will assign you a NIE at this time. Not entirely sure, but I'd guess you need two appointments for two EU citizens.

You should note that you don't have to do this immediately on entering Spain. You can move to Spain, rent an apartment, etc. without doing so. However, if you're intending to live in Spain indefinitely, you should do it sooner rather than later. Christmas sounds like a busy time with lots of holidays, seems better to wait until next year.

This process is entirely doable on your own, but is easier with a helper/translator/gestor. A lawyer will make it very easy, but probably a little pricey.

For this you need an EU passport, proof of funds, proof of (private Spanish) health insurance (with no copago). This is for "economically inactive" folks, the requirements are slightly different for employed/self-employed. I think they will ask for your Spanish address. I'm not sure if you need a proof (rental contract, etc.) at this stage, but it will be easier if you have one.

There is an application form, and you need to pay per appointment/application (forms online, pay at local bank).

You'll probably need all the certificates for family connections, marriage and birth certificates. Check the exact requirements for what you need and if anything needs translating.

You actually made me understand that I might have a problem with the NIE number because we are going to Spain with my family without a contract. I mean, we have savings that allowed us to live there for a long time without work, our children got into the Mas Camarena School, me and my husband want to learn Spanish (my husband speaks already a little Spanish) and find a job. He is C-Level Manager but decided to have one year break at work.聽 After a year, if everything works out for us, we will think about buying a house - we want to rent a house that we will be able to buy later. This is our perfect plan... But today I'm thinking if it will work out all. Seems pretty crazy to me...

We are from Poland we are moving from Copenhagen to Valencia.

I asked the school to provide us a document certifying that the children are their students and we will argue with this, But is it enough... I feel fear on my back.

Can we live there at the beginning without a NIE number?

We would like to have an account with a local bank (do we always need NIE number to do that?)

We need private health insurance

We need to buy a car after coming to Spain

And of course we want to rent a house...

Lots of questions, I know.

This EU Citizen Registration thing is very quick. I booked an appointment online (cita previa) and flew in only for a couple of days. If you give them the documents they ask for then you walk out with your certificate (which has your NIE). It's better to do this than try to just get a NIE on its own.

You don't need a NIE to arrange a school, or buy health insurance, or rent an apartment. Most banks will ask for your NIE, so safest to assume you will need it. (No problem, you can use your current bank, or use an ebank like Wise or Revolut.) You will need your NIE to buy a property or a car. You will need your certificate (i.e. be a legal resident) to be in the public health system.

With a Polish (EU) passport, it's very easy. You can just pack up and move to Spain. It's no problem at all. I doubt there is anything to be afraid of.
