Raising children as an expat in Colombia means discovering new parenting habits. School routines, discipline, food habits, independence, social life鈥� many things may work differently in Colombia compared to your home country.

I don't have kids, so this is just by observation:

A large majority of women who have kids do so out of wedlock.聽 It also seems to me that the fathers are out of the picture for the kid as they grow.聽 These kids are often pawned off to the grandparents, either the mother's or father's.

It's only anecdotal, but it's what I see around me in my community....聽 I'm sure it's different in Estrato 4+...

An internet search gives figures for out of wedlock births as high as 87% in Colombia, some studies give a bit lower figure but not by much.

I don't know if this includes civil unions or uni贸n marital de hecho.

I am fortunate that in my Colombian family, the percent is zero!聽 I suspect there is a class/estrato difference with higher estratos having a lower percentage.
