university for US student (freshman 2015/2016)

Anyone on this forum with any thoughts or experience with being a foreigner attending a university in Uruguay? This would be for getting what would be a BA or BS degree in the US.聽 Our son will be graduating from HS in the US May 2015; we are doing college & university applications right now (limiting it to schools with sailing teams; ACT is 25).聽
As we are planning on retiring to Latin America in 3 years and perhaps it would be ideal for the kid to be there already in university in Latin America.聽 His area of interest is urban planning and he is a competition-level sailor.聽 We are a sailing family so Uruguay is our #1 spot on our retirement list for SA; with BVI's for # 1 for the Carribbean.聽 Any thoughts on universities?聽 Anyone sail? thanks in advance for your thoughts.

You might want to ask some of the folk on the uruguay Expat Facebook group as many are locals and can give more info.

I have heard that because university is free to permanent residents and citizens, they are extremely crowded with kids sitting on the floor outside the classroom trying to hear what is going on inside.

I was told there are more architects per person here in Uruguay than anywhere else in the world but cannot say if that is also the case for urban planners - there are few urban areas in Uruguay.

You also should look at the rankings for the Universities here. They are not good compared to other S. American ones and even worse if you compare them to N. American.

thanks ever so, appreciate it. Interesting about the architects. It is competitive for schools here in the US.聽 UT/Austin & Rice have great programs and fierce competition to get in.聽 Tough when everybody is in the 30's for ACT's to get the 25 - 29 ACT'ers even considered.
